Crossing the Owl’s Bridge: A Guide for Grieving People Who Still Love by Tahoe-Truckee resident Kim Bateman, Ph.D. has been named by the Independent Book Publishing Professionals Group as one of the best indie books of 2017.

Bateman’s book is a finalist in the non-fiction category in the 2017 Next Generation Indie Book Awards, the world’s largest not-for-profit book awards program for independent publishers.

Catherine Goulet, Co-Chair of the 2017 awards proudly said, "Our program has become known as the Sundance of the book publishing world." In an article at CNN.com titled If it's cool, creative, and different, it's indie, journalist Catherine Andrews wrote: "The term 'indie' traditionally refers to independent art – music, film, literature or anything that fits under the broad banner of culture – created outside of the mainstream and without corporate financing."

Crossing the Owl’s Bridge emphasizes that we do not stop loving the deceased. Instead, we need to find creative means to honor them and our relationship. The book uses the wisdom of worldwide folk tales and people’s personal stories to demonstrate how to share, ritualize, and transform grief. The premise is that although we do have to say goodbye to our material relationship, we are also being presented with a chance to say hello to a different type of connection. Crossing the Owl’s Bridge illustrates creative outcomes to mourning that allow one to recognize, contain, release, and yet stay in relationship and keep loving. It is available at Word After Word in downtown Truckee or online at Amazon.

Dr. Bateman’s research interests include organizational psychology, bereavement, and humor and she has delivered many notable keynote addresses, including:  "There's a fox under my bed and pixie dust in my hair," at the Developmental Psychology Conference, "The Psychology of Humor" at the Women’s Wellness Conference, and “College Culture through the song lyrics of Bob Marley,” at the Community College League of CA conference. You can find her TEDx talk called “Singing Over Bones” online and she is the author of Crossing the Owl’s Bridge and a chapter called “Symbolmaking and Bereavement” in And Death Shall Have Dominion (Interdisiciplinary: London).
