ASC Training Center (ASCTC) on Donner Summit is quickly shifting gears after the close of winter programs and operations to host five major running events throughout the summer and fall. And there's something for everyone! All of these events help fund the Training Center's Nordic and Biathlon programs.

A perennial favorite, the Firecracker Mile, is eagerly anticipated from year to year as the kick-off to Truckee’s Fourth of July parade. Last year over 600 runners of all ages and abilities took part in the mile-long event where thousands of boisterous spectators cheer athletes along the route from Gateway to the downtown finish line.

On July 29, ASCTC hosts the 37th Annual Squaw Mountain Run, a 3.6 mile run or hike at from the base of KT-22 to Squaw Valley USA’s High Camp. For nature-lovers who want to take advantage of a Cable Car ride to the top, there’s the annual Flower Walk held simultaneously at High Camp, which will be led by staff from TINS (Tahoe Institute of Natural Science). No matter your mode of transport, the Squaw Mountain Run is an unparalleled local event and an experience to share with family and friends. In addition to helping support ASCTC’s programs, 20 percent of all proceeds directly benefit the Tahoe Forest Health System Foundation for programs and services at the Gene Upshaw Memorial Cancer Center. For many, the event has become an annual ritual of celebration following personal struggles with cancer or in memory of someone they’ve lost. ASCTC has raised over $20,000 in the last six years for the TFHS Foundation.

The 3rd annual Sierra Crest Ultra Run, which boasts 50k and 30k distances and a 15k Fun Run, is slated for Sat., August 5. All three races launch from the Tahoe Donner Adventure Center. The 30k and 50k runs end at the Training Center’s day lodge on Donner Summit, while the 15k run loops around and finishes back at the Adventure Center. This event bookends ASCTC’s 2017 Running Festival, a week-long series of runs and fun activities that opens with the Squaw Mountain Run. For participants there will be free paddleboard demos at West End Beach, a Sierra Crest Ultra Run trail preview, Happy Hour at Tahoe Mountain Sports and more.

Runners should also save the dates for Run the Runway on October 1st and the annual Donner Lake Turkey Trot on November 4th. The inaugural Run the Runway was held last fall at the Truckee Tahoe Airport and the 2017 event is expected to draw a larger field more family friendly happenings at the airport on race day. The Turkey Trot, now in its forty-first year, features a challenging 7.2 mile run around Donner Lake, as well as the “Mashed Potato Mile,” a fun run/walk for those seeking a less competitive atmosphere.

ASCTC graciously acknowledges their running series sponsors: Salomon. Tahoe Mountain Sports. Darn Tough. Nature's Bakery. Road ID. Ultimate Direction. Hammer Nutrition. USFS. TDPRD. The Brewing Lair. Adventure Sports Journal. Camelbak. 50/50 Brewery. Brad Henry Pottery. Tahoe Donner Association. 2XU. Sierra Symmetry. NLTRA. Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows. Silver Sage Sports & Fitness.

About ASC Training Center
ASC Training Center’s summer running series, besides offering fun and challenges for athletes of all ages, helps support their Nordic and Biathlon programs. Skiers from age two to 82 participate in programs at the non-profit training center on Donner Summit. ASCTC has evolved over the years into a world class training and racing venue from its humble beginnings as the Auburn Ski Club, founded in 1928 by a small group of dedicated skiers and jumpers from the Foothills. Auburn Ski Club has played an integral role in the history and development of winter sports in the Sierra for ninety years and their coaches and programs have developed many world class skiers and Olympians. Their primary mission is still a simple one: to foster the lifelong enjoyment of winter sports for families and athletes from the greater foothills, the Truckee Tahoe region and across Northern California.
