Making your own rag rugs is a beautiful way to add color and texture to your home, as well as to minimize textile waste. In this class you will learn to make a circular rug using a large crochet hook and yarn made from scrap fabric. Basic knowledge of crochet is very helpful but not required.
Class will cover all the basic stitches needed as well as best techniques for cutting strips and adding new colors to your designs. Oakland artist Tania Skevos will bring plenty of fabric for use in class but students are encouraged to bring their own lightweight woven or jersey fabric, including old T shirts and sheets. This is great way to bring new life to those favorite garments that may have been outgrown, stained, or ripped. You will go home with a completed small rug or the start of something bigger, and a new outlook on old textiles! Suitable for ages 14+.
