The session is primarily focused on learning how to cast-on and the two basic stitches that provide the foundation for everything else. Information about yarn, needles, and patterns will also be covered. This class is designed for the person who is brand new to knitting or the knitter that put their needles down long ago. Our time together is immediately followed by our weekly knitting group. This gives you an opportunity to socialize with other knitters and a bit more time to practice your newly learned skill!

We will discuss what to look for when selecting wood, tips for spoon design, and how to carve with confidence. Learn to safely use a sloyd knife and hook knife, with emphasis on technique and efficient carving. Then design and carve your own wooden spoon from freshly cut wood using only hand tools and your creativity. No carving experience needed.

Basketry has roots in many cultures. Locally we see the indigenous people using native grasses, needles, ferns, and fibers. This class will be teaching an adaptation of twined basketry that can be found in the Americas and in Europe, as well as on other continents. Soft fiber basketry allows you to reuse materials that may otherwise go to waste. We will learn a basic technique of twined basketry using natural fibers and recycled yarns. These baskets are great as water bottle or jar covers, as well as stand alone small baskets.

The egg has long been a symbol of new life, new beginnings, fertility, and shared as a token of love, friendship, and good wishes throughout the year. Ukrainian Egg Dying or “Pysanky” is an ancient art form akin to Batik. Melted beeswax is applied with a stylist called a “kistka” and the egg is dipped into a secession of dye baths. Between each dipping wax is applied over areas where the preceding color is to remain. After the final dye bath, and all wax is removed, the colorful result of your design is revealed.

We will use Lightroom Mobile CC App to shoot in DNG (RAW), make HDR images, adjust focus/white balance, ISO, and shutter speed manually, do creative portraits, and then learn how to do editing in Lightroom CC on our phones (which must be purchased and installed for this workshop; Lightroom requires a free Adobe Account).

This workshop will be taught by Restaurant Trokay owner Nyna Weatherson, former head cheesemonger at the world famous Greenwich Village cheese shop, Murray’s. Weatherson will pass on her vast knowledge of cheese and skill guiding students through the mozzarella making process. Students will make their very own batch of mozzarella, all while enjoying a glass of a perfectly paired draft brew. Each person will leave with their own batch of fresh mozzarella, tasting notes, and the know-how to create the cheese again for their friends and family. All supplies included.

Seed bead weaving is a wonderful way to add bold colors and graphic patterns to your craft knowledge repertoire. Some beading projects can take forever but these fun, quick rings are a great way to get a taste of this new skill. This workshop will cover how to create simple patterns in traditional flat weave peyote stitch, as well as finishing techniques and an overview of different types of suitable beads and supplies for the project. Bay are artist Tania Skevos will have an extensive palette of colors to play with during class. All needles, thread, and other supplies will be provided. Suitable for ages 14+. Those needing glasses for seeing up close should bring them.
