Another local classic, the Sawtooth Trail, could represent a reasonable next step for a beginner graduating from the Emigrant Trail. Bring a snack and enjoy views of the Truckee River from atop one of the two obvious cliff overlooks.

A largely flowy ride with a few short climbs and rocks over a lollipop-shaped out and back route. Make sure you’re paying attention for a few challenging rocky sections to work on your skills! This area has a multitude of other trails to add and explore if a longer ride or further climb is what you’re looking for.

Distance: 8.5 miles out and back, makes a “lollipop” shaped loop
Elevation: about 750 feet over 8.5 miles, tons of options to add on
Trailhead: FS06 road off of Thelin Dr
It is accessed through the Sierra Meadows neighborhood. To get there from downtown Truckee, head east on Brockway Road, right on Palisades Drive, right on Silver Fir and then left onto Thelin Drive and look for Forest Service Road #6 on your right.
